Originally established by candy companies who donated boxes of sweets to those in need, the day has evolved to represent any sweet gestures made to help someone who may need encouragement. A Little History: The original efforts by candy company executives were met by cynicism, as skeptics suspected the businessmen of attempting to start yet another commercial holiday that benefited their pocketbooks. However, it never did catch on as a “candy” holiday, more as a day for acts of kindness. 
Studies have shown that flowers elevate moods and generate happiness, so they are the perfect gift for Sweetest Day.
